The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held an opening ceremony for the United Nations Peace Memorial Hall on November 11, 2014. The UN Peace Memorial Hall, the world’s first UN museum, which is dedicated to remembering and honoring the sacrifices of UN soldiers who were killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.
Some 300 people, including Korean War veterans from home and abroad, government officials, diplomatic missions in Korea, as well as citizens, participated in the event celebrating the opening of the hall.
The Memorial Hall is housed in a five-story building with a total floor area of 7,999 ㎡ in Danggok Park near the U.N. Memorial Cemetery in Nam-gu. Construction on the site began in 2010 and the total cost for the project was 25.8 billion won. Under the theme of ‘Planting a seed of peace for future generations,’ the Memorial Hall features four exhibition halls, a 4D theater, a convention hall and an observatory, all of which will help raise awareness about the importance of world peace.
The UN Peace Memorial Hall is the first museum in the world to commemorate domestic and foreign war veterans and will also serve to educate those who haven’t experienced war to its horrors and the importance of peace.
It is currently only open for group reservations but plans to open to the public next February.
