BUSAN, South Korea — Three teenaged girls jumped to their death together this week, sparking an intense debate over suicide websites where the girls apparently had contacted each other to end their lives.
The girls, aged between 16 to 19, jumped off a 15-story apartment building in Gwangan-dong after drinking soju together and locking the door to the roof. Two of the girls traveled from Gwang-ju and Daejeon to meet over the weekend, where they watched the fireworks Sunday night before ending their lives Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m. According to the Joongang Ilbo, the police said two of the girls,Yoon and Kim, attempted suicide together back in August in a motel room in Busan. The charcoal they burned didn’t work, and the owner of the motel smelled the smoke, foiling their attempt.
The Korean Association for Suicide Prevention said the number of Internet suicide clubs for Koreans increased to 8,511 last year, up by a factor of 10 from 849 in 2008 according to the article.
According to the Ministry of Education, about 159 students commit suicide each year across the nation.
