The Star Treatment At Soo Casa

At the beginning of May, another new hair salon opened up in Busan, only this one is a little different than the rest: it caters to a foreign clientele. Owner and leading stylist of SooCasa Hair, Ji Soo Yoo (a.k.a “Soo”) just returned to Korea after having lived and worked in Toronto for the past six years.

Soo has had an impressive career so far, having worked for Canada’s #1 makeover TV show, “Style By Jury” on the W Network, as well as “The List” on Slice. She has also worked behind the scenes doing the hair and make-up for a number of daytime celebrities in Toronto.

SooCasa Hair offers a number of services that are appealing and specifically desired by foreigners living in Korea, and her fluency in English definitely takes away that “Russian Roulette” type of experience that is not always desired when getting a haircut and not knowing the local lingo.

Soo is unique amongst hairdressers everywhere, in that she combines her skilled abilities and knowledge of hair with a genuine care for her client’s needs. Prices are reasonable too, with a kids haircut at 10,000 won, men's at 15,000 won, and the ladies for 30,000 won. Hair extensions, perms, color, and styling are also available.

Aside from having a glass of wine or freshly brewed coffee with a friendly English-speaking stylist, there are more unique services available at this salon. A stand-up tanning bed, with all the bulbs and the door handle in place, as well as accelerating lotions that are imported from North America. It’s hot in there, but results are visible in 15 minutes, and for only 10,000 won per session, it's a great deal.

SooCasa also has a smoking room in the back for people spending hours at the salon. Her hair washing chairs are the most comfortable you'll find–there is no neck pain involved the day after getting a haircut here.

There is also a computer with an Internet connection, which is helpful for people like me who better explain things when there’s a picture involved in the discussion. And there are even English magazines on the rack.

Soo accepts both walk-ins and appointments, but word has spread fast already so it is advisable to make an appointment if you would like service on the weekend.

SooCasa is located at Jangsan Station, out exit #1, on the first floor (#122, 1F Samjeong Core) of the building that the Coffee Bean is in.
