BUSAN, South Korea – If one were to compare the Space Rhyme Continuum to an animal, the most appropriate choice would be the liger. Aside from a certain member resembling Napoleon Dynamite, the Seoul-based Space Rhyme Continuum brings to mind the hybrid offspring of a tiger and a lion as the group is an amalgamation of two seemingly incompatible art forms; freestyle hiphop and improv comedy.
The result is a performance unlike any other: a delightfully bizarre whirlwind of music, acting, comedy, and audience participation, which leaves crowds fully aware that they’ve witnessed a one-of-a-kind show.
Currently composed of B~Fax, The Naughty Rooster, DJ Wong Won, and newcomer Koffee Black, the Space Rhyme Continuum refer to themselves as “THE UNIVERSE’S GREATEST and only hip hop improv comedy crew” and “the bastard children of ‘8 Mile’ & ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’”
Their sketches start off innocently enough; the 'comediemcees' ask the crowd to give a suggestion, perhaps a name & power for a superhero, or an unusual crime that has been committed, or a reason a girlfriend has left. Then, within seconds of DJ Wong Won dropping the beat, the room is engrossed in improvised, rhyming madcap theatrics that would make Shakespeare spin in his grave like a turntable.
They transform stages into jungles, castles, and distant planets, with the room along for the ride on their lyrical adventures. Utilizing props, character voices, and lots and lots of jokes, the rhymenauts weave zany comical tales of free association, based totally on audience inspired ideas.
Space Rhyme’s greatest strength is their innovative genre bending, as audiences nod their heads to the music while laughing their asses off. The lines between freestyle rapper, improvisational actor, and outrageous comedian are blurred beyond recognition. Is it a comedy act or is it a hiphop concert? Neither; it’s a Space Rhyme Show and it continues this week for one show only in Busan at Vinyl Underground in Kyungsung.
To kick off the show comedian Chris Tharp will be joined by fellow funnymen, Albert Escobido, Matt Schmidt and Roy Early. Tharp will also host the night's events.
Closing out the show will be Busan's own One Drop East.
Space Rhyme Continuum will appear Saturday the 8th of May at Vinyl Underground in Kyungsung. Tickets are 10,000KRW which includes a free drink to get you started. For more details check out the event page.
