A South Korean soldier who killed five members of his unit has been captured after a failed suicide attempt, defense officials say.
The soldier, identified only as Lim, shot himself in the chest and was being sent to hospital, they said. His capture ends a tense stand-off in a forest near his outpost by the border with North Korea. He had an operation and his life isn’t in danger.
On Saturday evening Sergeant Lim shot and threw a grenade at soldiers before fleeing with his rifle and ammunition. Seven others were injured in the attack but are expected to live.
Earlier today, troops surrounding Lim in the forest tossed him a mobile phone so he could talk to his father. They also threw him bread and bottled water. His parents went to the area to try to persuade him to surrender.
