BUSAN, South Korea – Tony Akins scored 18 points, added five rebounds, seven assists and three steals as Goyang defeated the KT Sonic Boom 81-74 in the opening games of the 2012/13 KBL season for both clubs. Leon Washington added 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Choi Jin-Soo added 17 points.
KT rebounded after falling behind by four early to go on a 13-2 run over the next 3:46 to take an early 15-8 lead, as Jasper Johnson and Seo Jang-Hoon combined for an early 12 points.
The Sonic Boom opened up a 49-35 halftime lead after a strong outing by the second team, led by Cho Sung-Min's ten points, and some aggressive work in the paint from Darian Townes and rookie Jang Jae-suk, who also scored ten. The Sonic Boom shot an impressive 61.2% in the first half, including seven three pointers, compared to Goyang's 40.7% from the field.
KT went cold in the third, hitting only three of their 13 shots, and Leon Williams scored the first 10 of Goyang's 12 points in the second half, but back-to-back three's by Kim Dong-wook, the second with 2:58 left in the third to bring Goyang to within three at 56-53.
Cho Hyo-hyun's three with 3:40 in the fourth gave a 71-69 to Goyang, their first lead since early in the first quarter. After Seo Jang-Hoon hit a three to cut the lead to 76-74, KT had a chance to tie, but Akins steal and Cho's third three of the quarter iced the game for Goyang. Goyang outscored the Sonic Boom 46-25 in the second half.
Seo Jang-Hoon led KT with 16 points, while Cho Sung-Min added 15. Imports Darian Townes added 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks, while Johnson added nine points, three rebounds, a block and a steal.
