BUSAN, South Korea — Costco will observe a voluntary closure this Wednesday, December 12th in accordance of joining in the effort of the recent Chain Store Association and the RIDA agreement.
According to their website, Busan, Ilsan, Yangjae, Daejon, Sangbong and Ulsan will continue voluntary Wednesday closures on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month until revised DIDA ordinances are commenced.
Daegu and Yangpyung branches of the American discount wholesaler will continue to close on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.
Costco has drawn the ire of the Korean government in recent months by defying local governments ordinances to have discount stores closed twice a month.
Adding to the pressure were boycott campaigns by civic groups and criticism by the media. Costco Korea’s country manager Preston Draper was bombarded with acute criticism last month when he was called in to testify during the National Assembly’s audit of the government according to the Joongang Ilbo.
