South Korea announced a 23-player roster for its women’s national football team today for an upcoming regional tournament, with the majority having recently played at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Head coach Yoon Duk-yeo’s lineup for the Women’s East Asian Cup features 18 players who took South Korea to the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup last month in Canada.
It was the country’s first appearance in the knockout round.
This year’s East Asian Cup will open on Aug. 1st in Wuhan, China. South Korea will face China, Japan and North Korea.
Conspicuous by their absence are two of the biggest names in South Korean women’s football, including Chelsea Ladies star Ji So-yeon and forward Park Eun-sun.
In the FIFA women’s rankings, Japan is No. 4, followed by North Korea at No. 8 and China at No. 14.
South Korea is ranked 17th.
