The prosecution has asked for a ten year prison sentence for the driver who caused a fatal traffic accident that resulted in 24 casualties last July in Haeundae.

The 53-year-old driver who is identified as only Kim is indicted for violating the act on special cases concerning traffic accidents yesterday at the Eastern Branch of the Busan District Court.

The driver pleaded for a favorable decision from the court, swearing in his final testimony that he was unconscious at the time of the accident.

Police initially thought he might have had a seizure at the time of the accident due to his epilepsy, but they have concluded his health condition was not a factor after reviewing surveillance footage from that day.

The accident occurred on July 31, 2016 when the car traveling at nearly 100 km/hr flew through a red light which had pedestrians crossing in front of the Haeundae Cultural Center.

The speeding car clipped a parked car and hit a cyclist before careening through the intersection and striking other cars.
