Press Conferences and Super Hot Lost Star

BUSAN, South Korea – The New Currents Jury Press Conference took place this morning at 10 a.m., at the Grand Hotel in Haeundae. Hosted by Festival Director Kim Dong-ho, he was accompanied by the five jurors: Head Juror Wada Emi, Kim Yunjin, Murali Nair, Yang Kuei Mei, and Christoph Terhechte.

Head Juror Wada Emi, the first Asian to win an Academy Award for costume design, has significantly contributed to not only film, but to the theatre and opera. She highly anticipated her role as the head juror, and looked forward to discussing the films to pick the eventual winner. “We will decide the winner by voting process. We will meet until we decide,” she said.

Christoph Terechte, the head of the International Forum of New Cinema for the Berlin International Film Festival, has been a long supporter of Asian films. “Asian cinema is important and has a unique cinematic approach,” he explained. “I don’t distinguish Asian movies from other movies.”

Juror Murali Nair has a long history with presenting at PIFF. His films A Dog’s Day, A Story that begins at the End and Unni have all been screened at PIFF in previous years. A national award winner in India, his first feature length film was awarded the “Camera d’Or” at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

Taiwanese actress Yang Kuei Mei is well-known for her passion in portraying diverse characters. With her unique ability to transform herself constantly, she has also won a Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress in 2004 for The Moon Also Rises.

Kim Yunjin, known for her role as ‘Sun’ on the hit TV series Lost, rose to stardom from the Korean box office smash hit Shiri. When asked about her opinion on why Asian films still aren’t so well-known outside Asia, she responded, “American audiences don’t know much about Asian films in general. I hope festivals like this will help Asian films in the future.”
