President Park Geun-hye says she will review designating the southern regions hit by the torrential rains, including the city of Busan, as special disaster zones once a survey on the damage is completed.
She made the remark today when she visited the southern port city which was hit by torrential rains to check the progress on restoration efforts and to console flood victims.
After witnessing first-hand the areas hit by the floods, Park ordered related authorities to speed up the restoration work and focus on stabilizing the livelihoods of the victims by providing them with emergency subsidies and relief goods.
Park asked authorities to come up with fundamental measures to prevent disasters, taking into account changes in climate. As flood damage in the city was compounded by the collapse of a reservoir embankment in the region, the president also ordered authorities to inspect all the old reservoirs in the country and draft measures to prevent possible future collapses.
