JINDO, South Korea — President Park Geun-hye has visited the site where a ferry carrying 475 passengers sank off the country’s southern coast on Wednesday.

The president today arrived at Seomang Port on the southern island of Jindo, South Jeolla Province. She took a boat to the capsized ship to check on rescue efforts by the military and coast guard officials. Nine passengers are confirmed dead and around 287 people are still unaccounted for.

Park asked the government to mobilize all available manpower and equipment to rescue missing passengers.

The president then visited a gym where families of the passengers are staying and offered words of consolation.

An official at the presidential office said the president stayed awake all night before deciding in the morning to visit the site.
