South Korea’s eight-judge Constitutional Court has ruled unanimously in favor of President Park Geun-Hye’s impeachment.
Park was impeached by the South Korean Parliament in December and stripped of her presidential powers while awaiting the court’s judgment which came this morning in Seoul as thousands gathered outside on both sides gathered awaiting the verdict.
The scandal has been headline news for months with massive protests across the country calling on Park to step down while a much smaller organization of backers showed support for the embattled leader.
Park was accused of colluding with long-time friend Choi Soon-sil, and a former presidential aide, the two of which have been on trial, for pressuring big businesses, including Samsung, to donate to two foundations set up to back Park’s policy initiatives.
Park is additionally accused of soliciting bribes from the head of the Samsung Group for government who was seeking favorable influence for a merger of two Samsung affiliates in 2015.
Park has denied any wrongdoing.
