BUSAN, South Korea – For myself and many other Busanites, dining out is sometimes a source of frustration. When a new restaurant opens, there is always the hope that this is a place that will provide some of those dearly missed treats from home. The first meal is always a source of hope–unfortunately if you are like me, you usually walk away with a stomach full of mediocre food and disappointment. And yet, at Namaste, I was anything but disappointed.
Namaste is the newest addition to the Indian food scene in Haeundae. The owners are Narayan Sharma and Mr. Bogati, both of whom hail from New Dehli. This is their first restaurant venture in Busan, but they come with a depth of experience from their previous four restaurants which still operate in Seoul.
Their cuisine is mostly from Northern India, and upon arriving at our table we were greeted with the aroma of freshly prepared spices they bring from India themselves, and some absolutely wonderful dishes.
The menu is comprehensive and somewhat larger than what is offered elsewhere. During a meal with friends, we attempted the Aloo Gobi (12,000 won), the Lamb Vindaloo (14,000 won), the Chicken do Piazza (13,000 won), the Tandoori Chicken (9,000 won) and my personal favorite of the night, the Prawn Sag (15,000 won). The vegetarian Aloo Gobi was full of flavor, the meats were well-cooked and well-prepared and the prawns were done perfectly. The owner’s recommendation is the course menu (25-30,000 won), which provides a wide variety of appetizers and Tandoori, as well as your choice of any curry, plus Nan and rice.
"Because I also order and eat in this restaurant, I know all of my food intimately and care about its preparation,” said owner Narayan Sharma.
The owners speak English and provided us with friendly, helpful service. The restaurant is also decorated with traditional Indian decor, giving you the feeling that you're in an exotic land.
If you're looking for something delicious and different, without putting a big dent in your wallet, then this is the place. The excellent service and attention to detail is well worth the visit.
Namaste is located near Haeundae Beach, directly behind the BMW/Mini Cooper dealership. They are open from 11 am to 10 pm.
