The city of Busan is considering punishing Mega Mart, one of the city’s discount stores that violated the shutdown rule. Korean law stipulates large chain stores must close every third Sunday of the month.
The city is considering levying a 30 million won fine against the company. Busan is also considering inspecting the store for food hygiene, fire code and architectural violations as well.
If there are violations, the city can suspend the discount store.
A delegation from Mega Mart visited City Hall to apologize and promised not to violate the code again. City officials were not receptive to the apologies.
20 Busan civic groups also held a rally denouncing the retailer today.
