SOCHI, Russia -- Speed skater Lee Sang-hwa won a gold medal in the women's 500-hundred meter event at the Sochi Winter Olympics. It was South Korea's first medal in the winter games. 

Lee won the gold medal yesterday clocking a total time of 74.7 seconds, 0.36 seconds faster than Olga Fatkulina of Russia who came in second. 

In the two-race sprint event, Lee ranked first in the first race with a time of 37.42 seconds. In the second race, she posted a new Olympic record with 37.38 seconds. 

Lee is the first Asian athlete to win the gold medal two times in a row in speed skating in the Olympics. 

Fellow speed skaters Lee Bo-ra came in 20th while Kim Hyun-young ranked 24th and Park Seung-joo 26th.
