The presidential office has said South Korea may resume exports of kimchi to China as soon as this year. It comes as Beijing completed revising regulations on the pickled dish.
Senior presidential secretary for economic affairs Ahn Jong-beom made the announcement at a press briefing on Sunday.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang conveyed the sentiment at a bilateral summit with President Park Geun-hye on Sunday, according to Ahn.
China will make efforts to resume imports of kimchi from South Korea by making a public announcement of the revised regulation as soon as possible, Ahn quoted the Chinese Premier as saying.
Ahn said that if all procedures move swiftly, South Korea will be able to export kimchi to China before the end of this year.
Ahn also said South Korea will be able to export rice to China from January following announcements by both governments this month.
He said exports of samgyetang, or Korean ginseng chicken soup, will become possible in the first half of next year, as the two sides still require working-level consultations.
