SOCHI, Russia -- South Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na finished first in the short program event at the Sochi Winter Olympics. On the first day of the women's single skating competition held at the Iceberg Skating Palace, the defending Olympic champion ranked first with seventy-four-point-nine-two, her seasonal best. 

Russia's Adelina Sotnikova came in second followed by Italy's Carolina Kostner in third place, both decimal points behind Kim. 

Kim's compatriots Kim Hae-jin and Park So-youn finished 18th and 23d in their Olympic debut, both qualifying for today's free skate.
