New rules adopted this year to speed up South Korean baseball games are apparently working.
The Korea Baseball Organization said today the average time of a nine-inning game came in at 3 hours and 15 minutes through Thursday, down from 3 hours and 24 minutes last season.
Counting games that went into extra innings, the average time this season came to 3 hours 19 minutes, a drop of 8 minutes from last year.
For the 2015 season, the KBO League followed the example of Major League Baseball and introduced speed-up regulations.
For instance, the batter must keep at least one foot in the batter’s box once he steps into it. A violation will incur a fine of 200,000 won.
During an inning, a team must make a pitching change within 2 minutes and 30 seconds, down from 2 minutes and 45 seconds last year. When hit by a pitch, the batter must run to first base and remove his protective gear after reaching the bag.
