BUSAN, South Korea — As the winter cold recedes for another year, everyone is ready to get out of the house on the weekend. Here are 10 events going on around the city this weekend to keep you occupied and out and about on the town as April comes to an end.
The Vagina Monologues – It’s that time of year again when Busan’s women get together to perform Eve Ensler’s masterpiece, The Vagina Monologues. There is the "Voices for Vaginas" Friday night at 8 p.m., followed by three performances this weekend, all to raise funds for the Busan Nurim Women’s Shelter and the girls of Haiti. Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Vinyl Underground.
Lady Gaga in Seoul – Need we say more? It's everywhere in the press. If you don't already know when and where you probably don't care about it anyway.
Gwangalli Eobang Festival – The Eobang Festival is held every spring at the end of April based on the theme of inheriting the traditional spirit. It celebrates Busan’s fishing history and includes various events to keep the family entertained over the weekend. Friday through Sunday at Gwangalli Beach.
The Miniature Exhibition: Movie in a Box – Over at the ultra-modern Busan Cinema Center, a collection of miniature heroes from famous blockbuster movies are on display for cinephiles and movie geeks. The display takes place on the first floor of BIFF Hall, and if you haven’t had a chance to see the architecture, that’s worth the trip itself. Adults 3,000 won, students 2,000 won. Through June 3 on weekdays at 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at the Busan Cinema Center, Centum City.
Sharky’s Two-Year Anniversary – Rick and the gang at Sharky’s are celebrating their two-year anniversary this Friday night, with the help of the one and only Gino Brann on the guitar. There’ll be specials and great food as always, so head on over and say congrats after your day on Haeundae Beach. Friday 7 p.m. – 2 a.m. at Pale de CZ, Haeundae.
Busan International School Garage Sale – This Saturday morning, the Busan International school will be holding a garage sale at the school basketball court. The event is for charity, and besides, how often do you get to go to a garage sale in Korea? Saturday from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., rain or shine.
2012 UN Peace Park Spring Flower Festival – The UN Peace Park is located in Daeyon-dong and is a memorial of the fallen soldiers of the Korean War. Its flower festival offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and the park is a must see during your stay in Busan. April 27 – May 6.
Busan Museum of Art: Saturday Concert – For those looking for an entertaining afternoon of classical music, the String Quartets of the Daegu MBC Chamber Orchestra, the Men's Vocal Ensemble from the Busan Metropolitan Chorus, and a Harmonica Ensemble will be performing on the first floor of the Busan Museum of Art. Saturday at 3 p.m.
Baseball: Lotte Giants vs. LG Twins – The Giants are back in town after a week absence, and are surprisingly sitting atop the standings so far this year. Games are usually packed, and always a lot of fun for friends and families alike. Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m., Sajik Stadium.
BIWA Spring Ball: A Night In Paris – It’s not often you get to put on your Sunday best, but the black tie optional BIWA Spring Ball is a night to hobnob with Busan’s elite. A five-course French dinner with wine, a silent auction and dancing are all on the bill for the evening, and all to raise money for a great cause. Saturday from 6:30 p.m. until midnight at the Haeundae Grand Hotel
Fourth Strut! UK House Music & Live Art Party @ Almost Famous, KSU – A collection of underground DJs from England will be playing cool underground house & disco from England. DJs Samuel, Coco, Paffers and Timestone will be spinning, and the parties are growing in popularity among the hip set in Busan. Free admission. Saturday 11 p.m. until late Almost Famous, Kyungsung University area.
