BUSAN, South Korea – Around these parts, it used to be that the only way to see an international act was to book a flight to the Land of the Rising Sun, and get ready to shell out some major cash. Seoul manages to garner some solid acts from time to time, too, but Busan is usually relegated to flyover city status. Thankfully, the times have changed as a bunch of quality acts, at reasonable prices, have been stopping in Busan, leaving the people craving more.
This weekend is proof enough: The Handsome Furs and Teengirl Fantasy are here.
Hot on the heels of a summer packed with great music, Super Color Super and Busan Live have brought in not one, but two stellar acts. Veteran front man/guitarist Dan Boeckner of Montreal’s Wolf Parade and his partner in crime and life, Alexei Perry, will bring Handsome Furs to Vinyl Underground this Saturday night. Having formed in 2005, the pair have had some creative years together and seem to be hitting their stride.
After signing with Subpop Records, a label that includes artists such as Nirvana and Death Cab for Cutie, opportunities started opening up for Handsome Furs. They began playing shows with big name acts such as Modest Mouse and David Cross. On the road, the band has had a chance to hone their live shows and write the majority of the material for their newest carefully crafted album. They have gained praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Spin and are now nearing the end of their second Asian tour in the last six months.
Saturday night at Vinyl, Handsome Furs will be bringing us a show we won’t soon forget. Boeckner’s passionate haunting vocals and his fine guitar skills intertwining with Perry’s electro beats create poignant melodic songs that will be hard to shake days later.
The Ohio duo, Teengirl Fantasy, has received a lot of attention these days, from various sources such as Pitchfork and NME. They will be starting the night off right with their almost indefinable blend of chilled out electronic music. Teengirl Fantasy’s “bedroom pop” will bring dense, bright layered beats that will surely pull everyone to the dance floor and keep them there.
The show is at Vinyl Underground, Aug, 14th: Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Local Korean favorites Sleepstalker are the opening act. Pre-show party, with free ticket giveaways, begins at 8 p.m. down the road at Ol’55, with Busan veterans Southbay and Psychorocket playing.
Tickets are 20,000 in advance or 24,000 at the door. They are available at Ol’55, Crossroads, Soul Train, or Eva’s. Tickets can also be purchased by wire transfer until Friday. Check out more details here.
