Last Spring, Better Magic threw their biggest FUNKED UP to date, highlighted by a 200-person sing along to Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me", which avid FUNKED UP regular Braden Bever said, "was one of those moments where everyone came together, no egos, and just enjoyed some really good music".
It's the classic nature of the night, with a good portion of those on the dance floor dressed to the eras of funk and disco, that has become one of its biggest draws. "It's music that a lot of us have grown up with. It's stuff we listened to at home when we were kids, and honestly, I still listen to this stuff at home. Guys like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Al Green… that stuff never goes out of style" says Better Magic’s, BB Gibbs.
Vinyl Underground in the Kyungsung University area has played host to all the FUNKED UP parties. Its dance floor allows for a two person lane that splits the room in half –with party goers strutting their best moves down the line. Kyle Breedyk, (who you’d swear was Jack Black) became a legend after twirling down the Soul Train lane in his pa’s vintage powder-blue three piece suit, bell-bottoms and all.
Music will be provided by seasoned DJ's Woody Wilson, BB Gibbs, Brucie Russell and Splitkick who will weave classic soul, Motown, hard funk and disco into the night. BB Gibbs will MC, keeping people on the floor and leading giveaways until the sun comes up.
Best dressed will be voted on by the audience and will win a set of retro-design Eskuche headphones (courtesy of local street wear shop, Balansa), with incense, bottles and drink tickets for the runners-up.
So, break out the bell-bottoms, get those afro wigs picked and fluffed; all gradient shades, moustaches and rhinestones. Get there early, to claim your patch of the dance floor, it’s gonna be packed.
