2012 Spring Semester - Week 2 Advanced
Hi everyone,
This week, we will talk about "culture differences".
There are many differences in cultures, and they can lead to many misunderstandings. If you have traveled abroad, there are many things that you may have experienced that are different than what you know. Or, if you have met some foreign friends here, you might have had to explain some Korean culture differences to them.
This week's question is: What is an example of a culture difference that you have experienced before? Or if you haven't had that situation before, what is something when people visit your country that might be different than in their country?
Have a great week!

What is an example of a culture difference that you have experienced before? Or if you haven't had that situation before, what is something when people visit your country that might be different than in their country?
I have a german freind. He said It was general to eat milk rice in German. It sounds silly to say eating milk rice is the cultural difference, but I was shocked when i heard of it. How can German eat milk rice. I used to eat milk rice during my childhood. But I can't eat milk rice anymore because its taste is not good....
If Koreans go to a western country i think even saying hello will be different, like people kiss on the cheek.
And when you go to someone's house you have to get your shoes off in Korea but the western country don't have to
do that. On the other side foreigner will be most confused about Korean age problem. In Korea there is something
like the age is some kind of power, and the old you are the most power you have. Also the food's are spicy, that
will be different.
I was usually at home in my vacation, but I did a lot of things that I was not able to do during the semester.
I learned squash , went on a vacation with my boyfriend, and traveled with my friends!
The highlight was to have been to japan . It was the most impressive one among many things.
What is an example of a culture difference that you have experienced before? Or if you haven't had that situation before, what is something when people visit your country that might be different than in their country?
I haven't visit many country.
But, I was watching TV program. The program is culture shock.
I think culture shock is natural phenomenon.
For example, Korean like gochujang. But, Many foreigners don't like gochujang.
Because Korean have had gochujang many times. But, Many foreigners do not.
the difference that a foreigner would experience when they come here would be food culture. In other countries, they only eat one meal but in Korea, we have many meals altogether. Thus it would be a shock for foreigners.
Also, they would be shocked if they see high school students staying in school until night
In linguistic part, My country is very different from other countries.
Relative to other countries, Korea has various and well-established expression of honorific.
This is the main reason that many foreigners have difficulties in learning Korea.
From old times, Korean people regarded manner as a very important thing and
we can say that Hanguel is involving this traditional spirit.
If foreigners visit Korea, maybe they can be astonished by food culture, ‘faster and faster’ culture, privacy culture.
At first, foreigners can be astonished by food culture of Korea.
Food culture is different in various countries, but it is difference that most foreigners almost meet the first time.
Secondly, foreigners can be astonished by ‘faster and faster’ culture of Korea.
Most Koreans do anything as soon as possible.
This behavior is ingrained in the psyche.
Some do this behavior, others do not.
But foreigners can be astonished.
Thirdly, foreigners can be astonished by privacy culture of Korea.
Most country respect privacy.
Because Korea makes much account of age and existence of marriage, Koreans can ask to foreigners to privacy information.
But foreigners can be embarrassed or offended at these questions.
Hello everyone.I'm a foreigner.I think the food culture is so different with my county.. i don't like hot food but i should eat hot food everyday..
I haven't experience that situation. But I hear that there are cultural differences between Korea and Australia.
When I was high-school, my English teacher told me her experiences in Australia.
She had lived in there for one year. One day, she was looking for getting a job but it wasn't easy.
She was so tired and thinks that she should go to home.
That time, some person tell to her, "Hi". She was so surprise because she did not know the person.
Time after time, another person tell to her, "Hello". So she was surprise, too. Because of them.
And she ask her friends why people talk to her, "Hi" and "Hello".
Then her friends say, "It's cultural difference. That is daily happening in Australia. It's not strange."
She know the reason after she heard that things.
So I know well about cultural difference between Korea and Australia for manners.
In Korea, nobody tell anyone, "Hi" or "Hello", suddenly. That is so odd.
Maybe Korean thinks that person who is crazy man. But it's not strange in Australia.
Thanks for her, if I visit Australia, I don't surprise for that.

When I was in Australia, I lived with foreign friends who are from Brazil, Japan and Colombia. Brazilian friends always enjoyed party with their friends even though the time was too late. Sometimes, we had in trouble because of it. They probably thought "All Asians are too boring "On the other hand, Most of Japanese friends are little bit introvert and sort of timid. I was quite intimate with Japanese friends because our culture is similar to their. For instance, They consider respecting to senior is important thing in their culture and our culture is as well. There is difference between their and our though. We usually say something directly although it depends on people. Japanese always say something indirectly so it is not easy to understand for us at first. I could not understand other cultures at first time and it was kind of 'culture shock'. As time goes by, I accepted differences naturally and even learned something interesting. I was good experiences.
