Former SG Wannabe leader Chae Dong-ha became the latest celebrity suicide in Korea yesterday, an alarming trend that has now claimed two celebrities in the past four days. Chae was 30 years old.
Chae joined SG Wannabe in 2004, and they became one of the more popular K pop groups of the 2000s, after his debut as a solo singer in 2002. However, his sudden departure in 2008 led to specuation that he was kicked out of the group, though official reason said he went to pursue a solo career.
After two failed albums and a fall from the popularity he once had, rumors of his depression began to surface. According to police, Chae's manger called the police after finding the singer hanged at his home in Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyeong district, northern Seoul.
His death is the second celebrity suicide this week, after announcer Song Ji-seon was found dead Monday morning.
