What is "TGIS"? Like all great things, this was a project born of desperation. Some friends were having a discussion about how Sunday night always seems to be such a depressing and sad time. What if we had a place to get together, play some music, and chase those Sunday night blues away? In honor of this purpose, my friend Mi-kyoung suggested we call it "Thank God It's Sunday".
Where and When is it? The open mic is held every Sunday night from 6-8:30 at "Episode in Coffee", a lovely cafe at the DongA University campus near Toseong Subway Station. See the "How to Find Us" page for more information.
Who are these people? The hosts of the TGIF Acoustic Open Mic are Joe Carrier and John Cotter. Both of us have been singing and playing guitar for many years and although we are not professional musicians we love to sing and play music.
What is an "acoustic open mic"? This is a performance where the audience members are welcome to join in and perform their own music. An "Acoustic" open mic is limited to guitar and other stringed instrumentation. Horns, drums, and electronic instruments are not typically encouraged. It is mainly for singer/songwriters to sing music accompanied by guitar.
Who can sing? Everyone is allowed to sing and encouraged to do so. I will be singing in English but Korean songs or those in any other language are welcome. This is not karaoke, so we will not be playing backing tracks. If you want to sing a song that someone can play along with you on guitar that is great. If you want to sing a song that we don't know, give us the chords and we will try to learn it for next week.
Do I need to bring my guitar? You can if you want but you don't have to. John and Joe are happy to share theirs.
