South Korean paleontologists have found a complete fossil of a small dinosaur in rare condition in Hadong County, Gyeongsangnam-do.
The dinosaur belongs to the theropod family and was a tiny little beast, measuring in at about 28cm tall and 5.7cm long with a 2.6cm wide skull. The theropoda belongs to a group of carnivorous dinosaurs that walked on two feet.
The discovery marks the first complete skeleton of this type of dinosaur to be found in South Korea as well as being one of the smallest species discovered in the country.
Until this discovery, South Korean paleontologists had only discovered fragments of bones belonging to theropods. The institute in charge of the dig said: “The way this dinosaur has been fossilized is unique in that it was discovered with its vertebrae connected to its ribs,” adding that there appears to be another individual fossilized in a rock next to it.
Remains of several other species have also been found in the Hadong area province, such as pterodactyl teeth fossils as well as those of pukyongosaurus, a long-necked herbivore that long ago called the Korean peninsula it’s home.
