BUSAN, South Korea – Once again, to kick off the summer season, the prestigious and exclusive two-member club, Sisterhood of the Traveling Banbaji, will host the 2nd Annual Busan Drag Prom in KSU on June 1st. Busan Drag Prom raises awareness of the gay community in Busan and raises funds for the Korean non-profit human rights organization ChinguSai (Between Friends), who works tirelessly to protect the rights of LGBT Korea.
Last year over 300 dragsters raised almost 3 million won to assist with the legal fees of an actual case where transgender Koreans were demanding sexual identification rights based on their choice– not their genitals. Korea was one of only two countries in the world where male and female sexual identification was based on the presence or absence of external genitals. Unbelievably, just this past March, Korean courts declared this inhumane and Korean transgenders won the right to select their sexual identification. Everyone who attended last year, your support helped make that possible!
This year’s theme is ‘You Betta WERQ! ‘ Open to your fabulous interpretation, the Busan Drag Prom is an all-inclusive event where all are welcome in whatever way they want to present themselves–Korean, expat, LGBT, or straight as an arrow. For one dragulicious night, all labels are left at the door and everyone lets their inner-Queen (or King) rule.
The KSU Pink Triangle
This year THREE is the magic number! Thant’s right, Dragsters- this year Busan Drag Prom will be held at three venues in KSU: Almost Famous, Eva’s Ticket, and last but not least…. Ol’55! We’ll be hooking you up with a dragtastic wristband that will allow you to strut with ease between all three venues.
Ol’55 will be our live music venue for the night. Anthony Garcia and friends will be starting off the night with a magical musical tour of the hits of Elton John, George Michael, and a few other tasty numbers. They’ll be joined by the fabulous 80s inspired Proxy Music a little later on and things might get a little jazzy before midnight.
Eva’s Ticket is the brand-spanking new bar from the folks joining forces at Eva’s and HQ. We’re gonna help them break the place in… drag style! Drink specials for all and live DJs pumping out the dance groove all night long!
Almost Famous will be headquarters for all your 80s and 90s classics, cuttin’ it old school. The crowning of the Prom King and Queen will be held at Almost Famous sometime just after midnight.
Also, following this year’s Rule of Three, here are three simple goals of Busan Drag Prom.
- Allow everyone a chance to let their freak flag fly and cut away all labels for the night.
- Give Koreans an opportunity to see how much foreigners care and give Korean LGBT a chance to be out and proud, even if it is for only one night.
- Raise money for ChinguSai to help make Korean society more tolerant and aware of the LGBT citizens of Korea. (As this is an inclusive charity event, please keep it friendly in the streets.)
WARNING: Do not get lost in the KSU Pink Triangle. It’s a lot more fabulous than Bermuda, but just as deadly!
Once again, area businesses have donated more than 20 fabulous prizes. Haircuts, bottles of tequila, pitchers of beer, food, and shot sets are just a few of the prizes that will be raffled off for just 1,000 won. Once again the Sisterhood and the Sisterhood alone (by divine right) will choose the most fierrrrrce bitches based on Creativity, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to be crowned King and Queen of the night.
Make no mistake, boys and girls. The costumes are fierce, and the mood is marvelous. So, whether you’re a She-He or a He-She, a king or a queen, or just a friendly supporter, we’ll see you on June 1st, a night we guarantee to be a total drag.
