If you’re walking around Namcheon-dong and the scent of hot, fresh-baked bread starts to fill your lungs, chances are you’re probably in Bbangcheon-dong.
The nickname, combining Namcheon-dong with the Korean word “bbang” for bread, was affectionately given to celebrate about 20 small and large bakeries, both well-established veterans and up-and-coming startups, clustered around Namcheon Station.
In the latest issue of Dynamic Busan, they’ve introduced a self-guided tour focused on four favorites from Bbangcheon-dong.
A Busan original with franchises throughout the city and elsewhere, including in Seoul and Incheon, OPS is one of the largest bakeries in Busan and a must-visit for travellers. Opened in the late 1990s, its signature product is the large cream puff, a flaky and delicate jumbo-sized dessert bread filled with vanilla-flavored custard that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. Breads made with seasonal strawberries are also popular in the spring.

Maitre Artisan serves French bread made by a French boulanger (baker). The bakery’s top-selling health-conscious bread is made with a natural fermentation starter and wheat flour imported from France. This bakery has attracted a loyal following, thanks to its authentic French baguettes, which are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Closed on Mondays.

This bakery is easily recognized by its white house-shaped sign and unique interior design, housed in a gigantic two-story building with a pointed roof. Its most well-known menu item is a Basil Chiffon Cake, with its spuit – a thin plastic tube – filled with olive oil that can be drizzled on the cake. Closed on Tuesdays.

About J specializes in homemade-style cakes made without artificial sweeteners that are sold by the slice. Chocolate strawberry whipped cream cake and tiramisu are just two of the bakery’s most popular items. Try a piece of sweet cake with a cup of coffee and get closer to bliss.
