Music: PS I Love You in Busan for One Show
The Kingston, Ontario duo PS I Love You brings the talents of drummer Benjamin Nelson and guitarist Paul Saulinier, a man that Spin Magazine named one of the best 100 alternative guitarists of all time. They’ll be in Busan Saturday September 8, bringing their garage-grunge inspired tunes to Vinyl Underground.
BUSAN, South Korea -- A year when Spin declares you one of the best 100 alternative guitarists of all time has to screw with your head. Paul Saulnier, from the Kingston, Ontario duo PS I Love You, seems to take it all in stride.
"I’m just trying to play with passion,” Saulnier told Spin when asked to describe the duo’s sound. That passion isn’t hard to hear listening to this band. Saulnier seems to wear his emotions on his sleeve and their danceable, noisy, guitar-heavy rock hits a strong emotional chord with the listener.
The duo, Saulnier and drummer Benjamin Nelson, formed in 2008 and, with the release of their 2010 album Meet Me at the Muster Station, the two forged new ground, being long-listed for the prestigious Polaris award for Canadian album of the year. Following their latest release, Death Dreams, the two have embarked on their first Asian tour and are garnering more and more attention for their great live performances.
Their unique sound comes from numerous influences, ranging from modern acts such as Wolf Parade to veterans Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Pixies and Metallica. Saulnier has breathtaking high vocals and loud, rhythmic melting guitar solos to make the listener not only listen to their music but also feel it. As Saulnier puts it: "It’s loud enough to feel inside your body.”
Opening the show will be three great local acts. The group 21 Scott brings their high energy to the stage along with local favorite Enter Busandman, who will be playing their last show before they retire to the halls of Busan lore. Starting the night off will be Tequila Thoughts, featuring some of Busan's best musicians, Jim Batcho, Im Gook and Yousef Cascabel, in a funk-jazz trio.
After a summer filled with some amazing music festivals and mind-blowing shows, we are lucky to get PS I Love You gracing our stage to close out these last days of summer.
PS I Love You will play with 21 Scott, Enter Busandman and Tequila Thoughts on Saturday, September 8.. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the music begins at 9:30 sharp. Tickets will be available at the door only for 15,000 won at the Vinyl Underground near Kyungsung University.
