May is in full swing, and there's some interesting things to do this weekend around town.


BUSAN, South Korea - It's getting near the time of May when the holidays start to come, though they haven't come quite just yet. In the meantime, the weekends are still the best time for events around the city, and this weekend is no different.

Don't forget about the partial eclipse this Monday morning. And more than that, we're introducing a few new options, including a marathon and a Thai food special that is sure to make everyone remember their time in the Land of Smiles.

Here are some picks from the Haps Calendar going on around the area. Have a great weekend!


Acoustic Night at Beached - Go on down to Beached in Gwangalli for Acoustic Night, featuring the musical talents of Lauren Leach, the Dope Senators and the one and only John Bocksay. Friday, 10 p.m., Beached Bar, Gwangalli.

The Slut and the Scat at Club Rockhouse - Jake and the Slut team up with the London Scat Party for a steamy night of rock and punk at Club Rockhouse in Seomyeon. They'll be joined by Korean group TWO.Y - featured on TV's Superstar K (Korean's Idol TV show). Rockhouse is a great venue with some pro gear that usually features top Korean acts. Time for the waygooks to invade! Friday, 10 p.m., Club Rockhouse, Seomyeon.

Punk Rock Party at Club Realize - A good night of punk rock is set for Club Realize this Saturday night, as bands from Busan and Gwangju tear up the stage. There is a 10,000 won cover, but you get a free drink, or pay 15,000 won for unlimited beer. Saturday, 8 p.m., Club Realize, Kyungsung area.

Rachel Yamagata - The American singer-songwriter from Virgina is in town this Sunday, and has collaborated with Ryan Adams, Jason Mraz and Bright Eyes amongst others in a brilliant solo career which has included three studio albums and four EPs. Sunday, 7 p.m., MBC Lotte Art Hall.


Black Light Party at Blue Monkey - DJ Nine will be putting a twist on his house music for their Black Light Party, and everyone is encouraged to wear white t-shirts and marker each other up with highlighters and glow up the bar into the wee hours of the morning. Friday, 8 p.m., Blue Monkey, Kyungsung area.

Sausage Beer Night at Club Caribe - Sauasage, beer and salsa? Sure, why not. Head on out to Seomyeon to check out the hottest in salsa dancing at Club Caribe and enjoy some good food while you're at it. Saturday, 8 p.m., Club Caribe, Seomyeon.

Paid Dues @ Vinyl Underground - The Megook Movement will be presenting Paid Dues at the Vinyl Underground in KSU. The show will be gathering a total of eight expat hip hop acts from Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju and Seoul all together for one truly special night of hip hop music and culture in Busan. There will be a party bus headed from Gwangju, so the crowd should be fun. Saturday, 9 p.m., Vinyl Underground, Kyungsung area.


Baseball - The Giants are in town this weekend for a three-game series against KIA. Though struggling of late, the Giants are always a fun way to spend an afternoon in the friendly confines of Sajik Stadium. Friday through Sunday, Sajik Stadium, Sajik-dong.

K League Football - Though the IPark and BTC aren't in town this weekend, Daegu FC is playing at home against Daejon if you happen to be up that way and want to get your football fix, or on Sunday, you can check out Gyeongnam at home to Seongnam in Changwon. Saturday, 3 p.m., Daegu Stadium, Daegu - Sunday, 3 p.m., Changwon Football Center, Changwon.

Busan Half Marathon - For the runners out there, the Busan Half Marathon is taking place this Sunday morning out in Dadae-po Beach. Sunday, 9 a.m., Dadae-po Beach.


Jump - The comical martial arts comedy Jump is back for a four-show run this weekend at the Busan Citizen's Hall. There are four performances over the weekend in what has been billed as one of the best musicals around the peninsula. Saturday and Sunday, Busan Citizen's Hall.

Thai Food Brunch at the Red Bottle - Affordable Thai Food is on the menu at the Red Bottle, though seating is very limited. Reservations are required, so follow the link for more information on this great deal. Sunday, 12 p.m., Red Bottle, PNU.

Regular Saturday Performance - Every weekend, free cultural events take place at the Busan Cultural Center. This week's performance is Fusion Sinawi Yetare. Saturday, 4 p.m., Busan Cultural Center.

Public Viewing of the Partial Eclipse - Though it is taking place early Monday morning, you might want to wake up early to catch the partial eclipse which is taking place this weekend over most of North America and Asia. Monday, 6:18 a.m., Geumryeonsan Youth Center, Haeundae Beach.
