Gordon Bazsali Jr. Releases Solo Album

BUSAN, South Korea -- Local musician Gordon Bazsali, Jr. recently released his new album Anathema,  a three-year project which has earned rave reviews and features some of Busan's best talent. Bazsali is a long time trumpet, guitar and electric bass player on the local music scene who also plays in One Drop East.

The Hampshire, Illinois native's 11-track album features contributions by local musicians Jim Batcho, Kelsey Smith and Gino Brann. It marks his sixth release, and his first since working with Busan-based band Cuttlefish. The liner notes hint at his eccentric sound: "This album represents three years of work, recorded on studio mics and iPhones, employing mostly guitars, but also trumpets, cocktail glasses, school desks, passing trains, and dog whimpers."

The album lives up to its billing, weaving in and out of various themes with abstract, sometimes poetic lyrics laid atop simple yet well arranged chord structures by the obviously highly competent Bazsali: "I was bitching to hear myself complain/ Her sister was more worth the time than me/ I didn't go to the bank that day/ I threw my briefcase and tie in the water."

When asked to describe the three-year project, Bazail told Haps: "This album will not be banned by any right-wing activists, cause any dance club floor frenzies, or appear on any pop radio playlists... and I’m fine with that. What I hope it might do is give experimentalism a slightly better name. I would characterize it as mostly-sober, DIY-fi experimental rock."
