Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-Fai Talk Cold War

"Cold War" kicked off the Busan International Film Festival Thursday, and stars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-fai talked about their new Hong Kong cop thriller before the world premiere screening.

BUSAN, South Korea -- Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-fai may have had a direct competition in their new Hong Kong feature cop thriller, Cold War, but off-screen, the two were in comedic fashion during their press conference for the opening film of the Busan International Film Festival Thursday afternoon.

Speaking in front of hundreds of journalists at the Busan Cinema Center, Kwok and Leung were all smiles about their latest work, which made its world premiere.

“[The film] was a big challenge to me. It was a collective effort to refine our scenes,” said Kwok, the more animated of the two. “The director said I did a good job. After all the work and effort, we re-shot the scenes and Tony and I said it was all worth the effort.”

Kwok also noted that even though there was an age difference, Leung was a pleasure to work with.

“It was a great opportunity for me to act with him,” he said.

The movie centers around two deputy chiefs, Lau and Lee, who set to solve a hostage case of five Hong Kong officers, though internal conflict and personal agendas get in the way of solving the case.

Though some compare the storyline similar to the iconic film, Internal Affairs, director Longman Leung disagrees.

“In this movie, we picked an internal conflict,” he said.

Tony Leung Ka-fai, one of Hong Kong cinema’s leading actors, also noted some differences.

“The big difference is not to show the conflict between people, but show the problems in the Hong Kong Police system.”

The film’s final scene also leaves the impression of a sequel, though the directors noted there is nothing in the works.

“We’ve not thought of a sequel yet. There is not a plan yet.”

Kwok, who is making his second trip to the festival as well as Leung were both excited that the movie had been chosen to open the 17th annual film fest.

"It's my pleasure to be here again," Kwok said. "It's my second time to BIFF and it's an honor to be here," he said.
