BUSAN, South Korea – The sand and sea of Haeundae Beach will once again be teeming with international surfers looking to take the trophy at this year’s Mayor’s Cup June 29th through July 1st. Last year, due to a miscommunication between city officials and the beach patrol, the competition was actually cut short for fear of safety concerns because the waves were too high! Granted, there was a typhoon off the coast, but still, the news went viral around the world. That’s been ironed out and the event is set to take place with professional surfers coming in from Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and Japan to complete with local Korean and expat surfers.
Cheryl Kim, from Kai Surfshop in Gwangan-li, a co-sponsor of the event, is excited about this year’s competition. “We are all very optimistic that this year’s competition will cement Korea’s position as a surf destination in Asia.”
